Hi Families,

I am currently working on a new website for our class! This new site will make it easier for me to upload pictures. You will also have the ability to download documents, like field trip forms, or our weekly spelling tests.

I hope to have this website up and running by next Monday. I will post a link to it on my blog, so you can access it easily.

Spelling!

Welcome to spelling! The fourth quarter of Kindergarten has begun! For the remainder of the school year, your child will have a weekly spelling test. The spelling words are selected form a word family, which allows your child not only to listen to letter sounds, but apply the rule. The challenge words are sight words. Your child will be expected to write a sentence using a challenge word.

A pretest will be given on Monday. As part of the weekly homework, please have your child trace and write the spelling words (and challenge words) as well as complete the challenge word work. The spelling tests will be on Thursday. The Kindergartners are doing great and are certainly up for this challenge.

There are two lists of words. If your child got all the words correct on the first pretest with short vowel sounds they were given a word family with long vowel sounds.

MARCH! It is hard to believe that tomorrow is the first of March. Here is what's planned for this week:

In science we will be talking about the arrival of spring and what it brings. In social studies we will be celebrating Dr. Suess's birthday (March 2) and enjoying many of the books he wrote. In math we will continue working on money, tally marks, and if we have time, subtraction (there is some subtraction work coming home for homework). Students will continue working on different leveled readers and will be bringing home a new sight word book. We will be cover the short e sound and the sounds for x and z. During our writing time we will be writing using the five senses.

Hi Families,

Thank you to everyone who came to parent teacher conferences. It was great meeting with you all and showing you how much progress your students have made. If we did not get a chance to talk, it is not to late. Please send me an email and we can schedule a time.

Here is what is happening in class until the end of February.

Science: the states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We will also be talking about teeth and how to keep them healthy.

Social Studies: We will be talking about money.

Math: Since we are talking about money in Social studies we will be working with money in math. Adding pennies, nickels, and dimes, as well as some graphing and subtraction with pennies.

Reading: We will read and discuss the ant and the dove and how many spots does a leopard have?. Students will also be reading books at their reading level and the decodable book "the bib" focusing on the short o, b, and the hard c (k) sounds.

Writing: I will be introducing the six traits of writing and we will continue to work on capitals, periods and writing a sentence (subject and verb).

I hope you all have a wonder end to February and please remember to sign and return their reading pizza papers if they have been reading at least five times a week for 20 or more minutes.

Hey Families,

Wow we have been in school for more than 100 days! We had fun yesterday counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's while sharing our items from home. The highlight of the day was writing the numbers on a hundreds chart and then using that chart to make fruit loop necklaces!

Here is what we will be learning this week:

Math: How to use tally marks, and comparing weights using a scale

Reading: The decodable book "Hat". Also the "sh", "ch", and "th" sounds.

Writing: Continue working on when to use lower and uppercase letters.

Science: We will be studying the different animal families (Mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, and insects.

Howdy Families,

I wanted to let you know that the folders in the binders are for homework. You will now find decodable books, worksheets, and other homework inside the folder. Please remember to be reading every night and make sure your student colors their pizza slice for the day. When all four pizzas are full they will get a coupon for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut!

Here is some information about what is happening this week in our class:

In Social Studies we will be learning about the 4 presidents on Mount Rushmore. We will be reading about them and writing a sentence about each one.
In Math we will continue working on addition while we graph probability with dice. There will also be some domino addition coming home for homework.
In Reading we will be working on the short i as well as reviewing the short a sound. I will also be sending home their first decodable book "Sam Sat". We will be reading, watching, and retelling the famous story of Chicken Little.
In Writing we will continue learning about when to use capital letters including proper nouns (names of places and people).

Also next week on Tuesday, January 25th we will be celebrating the 100th day of school! Your student will need to bring 100 of something. This could be 100 pennies, buttons, Cheerios, skittles, or anything else you can think of. Please do not send these items until the 25th. I will also send out a reminder on Monday.
